About. My name is Robert Addams and I have been making Automata for over 20 years. I was privileged to be able to pass my passion on whilst teaching at Art School for over 15 years.
I have not designed and made any resent work but now have a new workshop so I hope to start soon. I will of course keep you posted of my progress on this site. |
I made my first Automata in 1997I was at the Festivel Hall in London where I saw my first exhibition of Automata. It was like being hit with a sledge hammer and hearing Angels singing all at the same time. The work of Paul Spooner fired my passion and I would consider him to be one of our best contemporary makers. I would strongly suggest you explore his work. Robert Ives is another amazing artist, whose use of card is brilliant. As a paper engineer my self, I take my hat off to him.

My GoalI have moved on from teaching but I I still have a passion for passing on information. I hope that this website might inspire a future generation who now have access to such amazing things a laser cutters and 3D printers. However I still believe that the simple pleasure of hand crafting your own work will never be totally superseded by technology.

Where NextIt is both exciting and worrying to see the use of laser cutters being used to create works of art. I am proud to say I fall into the old school of "make it by hand". So each part is hand crafted and unique. Otherwise it is just an alternative form of mass-production. That said use what ever you want, after all who says you cant make mass production creative!

Onward to TomorrowI have always used a lot of recycled materials. If you live by a Beach you will find some amazing objects washed up to work with. I have started looking at alternative media such as ceramics, but ultimately I think modern Tec such as 3D Printers and Laser Cutters will probably lead the way as we hurtle through the 21st Century.
These are now readily accessible in Schools and Colleges. |
